Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare leadership skills and nursing services according to personality types among nurses in hospitals, and to examine factors which affect leadership skills and nursing services to furnish basic data for nursing intervention programs.

Method: This study employed a secondary analysis design. Subjects were 135 nurses, working at hospitals in C province and D city. The instruments included the personality scale by Cho, the leadership scale by Kim, and the nursing service scale by Lee. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA and stepwise multiple regression.

Result: The leadership skills of nurses differed according to age, education and marital status. Nursing services differed according to age, education, marital status, career, night duties, position, and income. The nurses¡¯ personality types were ESFJ, ENFJ, INFJ and so on. Judgement personality group scored higher in leadership skills and nursing services than perception personality group. The most powerful predictor of leadership skills were nursing services, and those for nursing services were leadership skills and education.

Conclusions: The findings indicate that judgement personality type among nurses tends to enhance both leadership skills and nursing services. Leadership skills and nursing services are learned by nurses through educational self-development programs.
